Abstract

The authenticity of academic certificates such as diplomas remains a critical issue, as conventional verification still relies on centralized issuing institutions and is vulnerable to forgery. This study focuses on the design and implementation of a smart contract as the validation layer of a hash-based digital diploma verification system built on a hybrid blockchain-IPFS architecture. The smart contract, named DocumentVerification, was developed using the Solidity programming language and deployed on the Ethereum Sepolia testnet through the Hardhat framework with Alchemy as the RPC provider. The contract stores the SHA-256 hash of a document together with its IPFS Content Identifier (CID) inside an immutable mapping, enforcing input validation to reject empty hashes, empty CIDs, and duplicate registrations. Functional testing using the grey-box method through the Hardhat test runner shows that the storeDocument, getDocument, and verifyDocument functions executed correctly and that the contract successfully rejected all invalid-data scenarios. The results demonstrate that the smart contract is able to guarantee document integrity and enable independent public verification without depending on the issuing institution.
